~ 13 years old

      Sponsored by: Lorena L.

Benji is one of our resident special needs birds. She has suffered from years of pain due to self-mutilation and has battled infection after infection. Despite all of that, Benji is a brilliant, loving, and charismatic bird. Our days start and end with caring for Benji, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

BENJI'S STORY: Benji came from one home, where she lived her entire life. She was loved and adored by her owner, and was a treasured member of the family. Sadly, for reasons unknown, Benji began to pluck her feathers around the age of 9. As time went on, the plucking worsened, leading to sustained injuries and infection. Her owner did everything she could to help Benji overcome this illness, but all the vet visits and administering twice-daily oral medication eventually took its toll. Benji became traumatized, and no longer wanted anything to do with humans. Veterinarian advice was to euthanize Benji, but her owner knew she had a lot of life yet to live and refused to give up.

When Benji came to us, she was angry and despondent. She screamed when we came near her, fearing more pain. But in time, Benji grew to trust the Mulberry Acres crew, and she even started taking her medication willingly each day. Now, on occasion, Benji steps up for us, snuggles us, and even gives kisses. She has started talking and whistling again, and is on the home stretch of fighting off her infections. We cannot wait for the day when Benji's wounds are completely healed and she is climbing around like the monkey-bird she was born to be!
